Writing used to be my escape from the regimented and simple life. After my husband died, I turned to writing again as a way for me to cope with my grief. I hope this journey will lead me to acceptance, renewed faith and a firm belief that things can only get better.

Mom's Belated Birthday Treat
My Mother is one of the most unique human beings you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. She is as strong as a bull, with a mind as sharp as a person half her age. But despite her aggressive and head-strong demeanor, she is in reality a kind and nurturing individual to the ones she loves. She actually has a soft side, even though she hardly lets anyone get through that tough exterior. It is also worth mentioning that another facet to this unique individual is her obsessive-compulsive behavior. Oh how i dread getting her involved in organizing and preparing social functions! She is a stickler for details and even the most minute one hardly goes undetected. This is the reason why she hardly throws birthday parties for herself. It would be too stressful! And because I know her so well, it is the same reason I would not even attempt to throw one for her.
In 2005, Mom was turning --, a milestone in anyone's life (clue: it comes after 59). My Dad, who's also the same age, opted for an extravagant celebration which my Mom spent months preparing for. Mom, on the other hand (and to my advantage!), opted for a birthday vacation with her 'daughters' and her closest girlfriends. We spent 5 fun-filled, no-stress days in HK! We enjoyed immensely and from then on, Mom announced that it would be an annual tradition for her birthday.
Last year though, we were not able to push thru as Mom underwent painful hip surgery that left her immobile for a few months. Now fully recovered, we ventured into taking that birthday vacation. This year, it was 2 months after her actual birthday in May. The busy bee spent her actual birthday preparing for PATTS' Formal Inauguration of its college campus. Finally, finally, finally! We're off to Kuala Lumpur for some down time!
